Surfing is a huge part of life for me and was the reason I went to Sri Lanka in the first place. The beautiful island is definitely an up and coming destination for surfers: it has great consistent waves and the perfectly clear turquoise water is insanely warm, almost like surfing in a bath! One of the most amazing things about the Sri Lankan ocean is that there are heaps of turtles, and you get to surf with them pretty much every day.
There are seasons on both the West and the East coasts, so you can surf the island all year round and the surf in Sri Lanka is perfect for both beginners and advanced surfers as there are such a wide range of spots. While the main hubs of Hikkaduwa (West) and Arugam Bay (East) become swamped in their high seasons, you can always hire your own little Tuk-Tuk and go exploring. If you look in the right places you can find some epic, completely deserted spots that are out of this world.
Whether you come for a short surf trip or a whole season, Sri Lanka is a must visit destination for all surfers. And if you like peaceful and un-crowded waves, go sooner rather than later!
